The Managing Attorney will lead a team of Managing Clerk’s Office professionals in performing tasks associated with (i) the filing and service of pleadings and other documents in Federal, State, and Local Courts and (ii) advising other Firm attorneys with respect to procedural rules required advanced technical knowledge. The Managing Attorney will also oversee the Paralegal team. 
Responsibilities: 
  • Applying initiative and ingenuity, manage, supervise, and train other members of the Managing Clerk’s Office
  • Applying advanced procedural/technical knowledge and superlative experience, proactively supervise and structure the Managing Clerk’s Office
  • Electronic filing of documents
  • Proactively advise other attorneys at the Firm on procedural questions/rules/practice requiring advanced technical knowledge
  • Perform advanced procedural/technical research on behalf of case teams, train and advise other attorneys at the Firm on same
  • Supervise monitoring of the Firm’s docket and calendar systems, including via the maintenance of due dates and calculation of such dates
  • Review documents before service and filing for correct format, adherence to rules, signatures, required filing fees, number of copies for court/chambers, service issues, etc.
  • Supervise retrieval of dockets and court documents, as requested by other Firm attorneys
  • Liaise with court personnel, as needed, to troubleshoot filings and miscellaneous issues
  • Supervise process of registering attorneys for electronic filing, and supervise/anticipate troubleshooting of account-access issues.
  • Communicate with various court and agency personnel to ascertain information regarding status of motions and applications; confirm conference and hearing dates online and with court personnel
  • Build strong working relationships with clerks in the SDNY, Second Circuit, New York Supreme Court, and beyond
  • Coordinate with process servers nationwide for service of summonses, complaints, subpoenas, and other legal documents
  • Oversee the attorney admissions/renewals compliance process for the Firm
  • Supervise procurement of certificates of good standing for newly admitted and practicing attorneys

  • Oversee management of paralegal team including supervising paralegal manager, monitoring paralegal hours, providing feedback to paralegals, participating in weekly paralegal committee meetings, serving as intermediary between paralegal, managing clerk, and litigation support departments, supervising training of paralegals and associates, and troubleshooting and revising internal paralegal systems
  • Other duties, as needed
Requirements:
  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an active bar license in good standing required
  • 8+ years’ relevant experience in a Managing Clerk’s Office at a comparably sized or larger law firm
  • Advanced knowledge of New York Federal and State Courts
  • Familiarity with litigation practice, and ability to quickly and accurately understand implications and deadlines associated with various filings
  • Exceptional working knowledge of electronic filing/filing procedures in Federal, State, and Bankruptcy Courts throughout the country, including, in particular, in the SDNY
  • Advanced knowledge of the CPLR, FRCP, FRAP, local court rules, and procedures
  • Advanced proficiency with an industry-standard calendaring tool (e.g., eDockets, CourtAlert, CompuLaw)
  • Advanced knowledge of PACER/NextGen, CPi, Bloomberg Law, CourtLink, and the NYS Unified Court System
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and to multitask under demanding situations
  • Flexibility to be available after-hours to assist with filings and procedural questions
  • Possess a strong customer service-orientation and work well within a team
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
This is an exempt position and the annual salary range for this role is $250,000 to $300,000, commensurate with experience. This salary range reflects estimated base salary.  Total cash compensation will be higher when factoring in year-end bonus and benefits.
